Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by many of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to discover anything he could about poker. He would tell his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the detrimental comments from other people kill his goal of being one of the greatest poker players on the planet.
He started playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an undying passion for the game of poker. He says that he is learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. Phil knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and always aspires to get better.
Even though Ivey has won some big tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
