Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender on the planet by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to discover whatever he could about poker. Phil routinely would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He didn’t let the detrimental comments from others destroy his goal of being one of the strongest poker players on the planet.

He began competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching period and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed many of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an eternal passion for the game of poker. He states that he’s picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his achievements. He admits to making blunders in each game of poker and constantly strives to improve.

Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he likes destroying money games on a normal basis.
