Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender on the planet by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to discover every little thing he could about the game. He routinely told his parents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the negative feedback from others kill his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.

He began playing intently after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning experience and winning was not a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made two final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he defeated many of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he is learning every single day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors every single session of poker and always strives to improve.

Although Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
