Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker player in the world by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching turning one. His grandpa taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup whatever he could about the game. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the adverse comments from other people destroy his goal of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil started competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a teaching experience and winning was not a regular thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated a number of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to discipline and an eternal passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he is learning every single day and is quite abashed about his success. Phil admits to making blunders in each game of poker and always strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a normal basis.
